Dr. Kimberly Baltzell is a Professor in the School of Nursing at UCSF and Director of Partnerships for UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences. She is the Director of Global Action in Nursing (GAIN) with projects across Malawi, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Baltzell has worked with colleagues across UCSF on updating the WHO Basic Emergency Care Course, particularly as it pertains to training nurses. With other nursing colleagues, she is exploring appropriate intervals for emergency care refresher training to make sure emergency skills are sustained across sites.

Dr. Marissa Boeck is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, and serves as an acute care surgeon at Parnassus and as an acute care and trauma surgeon and surgical critical care intensivist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). She is a Co-Director of the Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia (CHESA), as well as the Director of General Surgery/Trauma within the Center.

Michael Lipnick, M.D. is an anesthesiologist and intensivist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. He is a graduate of the UCSF School of Medicine and completed residency programs in Internal Medicine at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Anesthesia at UCSF as well as Critical Care Fellowship at UCSF.

Carol C. Chen, M.D., M.P.H. is a pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physician who serves as Co-Director of the Collaborating Centre. She is also the Co-Medical Director of the pediatric emergency department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. She is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine and completed a pediatrics residency program at UCLA before heading to Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine to complete fellowships in PEM and global health. During this time, she also completed an MPH at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Renee Hsia, MD, MSc

Dr. Renee Hsia is Professor and Associate Chair of Health Services Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UCSF. She is also a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies, the Institute of Global Health Sciences, and the Global Health Economics Consortium. Dr. Hsia has worked in numerous countries focusing on access to emergency care and changes in patient outcomes after health delivery system reorganization.

But many people think that emergency care requires a lot of fancy equipment and is out of their reach. The bulk of emergency care really is about 'organizing the chaos,' and I am passionate about working with people to find ways to do that within their systems."

"Over 20 years ago, on one of my first trips to Haiti, I was part of a team delivering food aid to a very poor, rural community. There was a young boy who had not eaten for two days—a normal occurrence for many children in that community. But unlike the other children who ran up to take the bags of rice in my group’s Jeep when we pulled up to the village, he instead came up to me and noticed a band-aid on my finger, which I’d used to cover a tiny paper cut. He gently touched it and looked up at me and asked in Creole, “Ou blese?” or, “Does that hurt?” If someone with so little can take the time to think of my needs, certainly I can do the same for others."
