Carol C. Chen, M.D., M.P.H. is a pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physician who serves as Co-Director of the Collaborating Centre. She is also the Co-Medical Director of the pediatric emergency department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. She is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine and completed a pediatrics residency program at UCLA before heading to Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine to complete fellowships in PEM and global health. During this time, she also completed an MPH at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Carol is passionate about improving the care of ill and injured children in low-resource settings, both abroad and closer to home. Her work in the Collaborating Centre has allowed her to pursue this goal by supporting the World Health Organization's efforts to expand access to high-quality emergency care, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Carol has focused on medical education, especially continuing medical education for working professionals, as well as advocacy. She has contributed to a number of curriculum development projects including the WHO/ICRC Basic Emergency Care course, and leading a group in the African Federation for Emergency Medicine to create a PEM curricula. She also serves on the WHO Taskforce of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine.
As a member of the WHO Global Alliance for Care of the Injured (GACI), Carol provides support to efforts to reduce the large worldwide burden of injuries. More locally, she is working with several agencies in San Francisco to raise awareness about the effectiveness of proven injury prevention techniques to reduce unintentional injuries in children.
